The hacker who created the malware that was allegedly used by Russian operatives to hack the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 Presidential election has been working with the FBI, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, August 16.

The individual in question, whose name has not been revealed, goes by the name of "Profexer," and is reported to have turned himself in to Ukrainian police earlier this year. Profexer's web activity came to a stop following the December release of a Joint Analysis Report that the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI did, in which the PAS web shell was identified as the tool used in the election hacks. Profexer is responsible for having written and sold the PAS code on the dark web.

While there is so far no evidence that Profexer ever actually worked with or had contact with Russian intelligence, it is reported that he has operated as a witness under Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's possible interference in the election.
