Shelters open ahead of Portland's freezing temps: 'It's extremely dangerous'

PORTLAND, Ore. – The freezing cold temperatures in this week’s forecast could prove dangerous for those that aren’t dressed in warm clothing.

Arctic air is making for the coldest start to a year since 1979. Forecasters expect daytime high temperatures to stay below freezing, and overnight lows will likely hit the low 20s and teens.

Michael Jacobs is homeless and spent Tuesday packing his car with his friend's stuff. The homeless camp on Southeast Flavel Street and 92nd Avenue had been cleared earlier in the day.

"They don't get a lot of help at all," Jacobs said. "It's really hard to stay warm."

Most of the people had left after the notice was posted a week earlier but a few had stuck around.

"If people aren't bothering others or what not, and if they keep the area clean, then they should at least be allowed," Jacobs said. "Other people should have more of a heart."

Many local shelters are preparing for an influx of people seeking warmth.

Portland’s Bud Clark Commons on NW Broadway at Irving Street normally functions as a day shelter only; however, they’re running 24 hours a day through the cold snap.

"When the temperatures go really low like they're going to this week, it's extremely dangerous,” said George Devendorf, the shelter’s Executive Director of Transition Projects. “That's why we encourage anyone who is outside NOT in a warm, dry, safe place to consider coming to a warming center."

For those in need of a warming shelter, dial 211 for a connection to local resources.

If you see someone in need (and it's not an emergency) you can call the non-emergency police number.
