Dialogue on Race Reconvenes for Second Annual Summit

On Saturday, January 25, 2014, the Dialogue on Race will reconvene for its second annual Summit.  The event will be held at the Blacksburg Community Center from 10:00 AM to 2:00PM with registration and coffee beginning at 9:30 AM.  The Community Center is located at 725 Patrick Henry Drive, Blacksburg, VA 24060.

In January 2013, recognizing that racial problems persist in Montgomery County, more than a hundred community members gathered for a Dialogue on Race: A Community Summit at the Blacksburg Community Center.  The focus of the January dialogue was to understand what it means to be an African American in Montgomery County today.  From this summit, teams formed around five key issues-Education, Law Enforcement, Jim Crow/White Privilege, Limited Presence, and Employment & Income Gap-and began planning action steps toward resolving some of the racial problems that had been presented. In June, these teams presented their progress, invited public feedback, and continued to work on these important issues.

On Saturday, January 25, 2014, the Dialogue on Race will gather again to learn and hear about the progress being made, to provoke discussion, and to invite participation in the ongoing work to solve racial inequalities.  Speakers will share perspectives and lessons learned since the last summit, including Mark Sisson, Christiansburg Chief of Police, who will report on progress on issues of law enforcement. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Lunch will be served.  To help us prepare, please RSVP to Wornie Reed (wornie@vt.edu or 540-231-6107) by Monday, January 20th.
