MPs call for all government workers holding up Brexit to be fired

Leave campaigners demand civil servants blocking EU exit are sacked as Chancellor Philip Hammond comes under fire

A LEADING Brexit campaigner insisted last night civil servants who are obstructing Britain’s exit from the EU should be sacked.

Tory MP and former Conservatives for Britain chair Steve Baker said “any official working to oppose our exit from the EU should be summarily fired”.

He said: “Any official working to oppose our exit from the EU should be summarily fired. If necessary, emergency legislation should be passed to make it possible.”

His response was echoed by fellow Tory MP Andrew Bridgen who said mandarins would be “stepping beyond their remit”.

It came as senior Tory sources claimed Chancellor Philip Hammond was acting as a “block” over plans for withdrawal because he insists Britain must remain in the single market.

The comments were stoked by former civil service boss Lord O’Donnell who said the UK could remain in a “more loosely aligned” European Union, despite the vote to leave.

He said it would take “years and years and years” to fully detach from Brussels.
