Stanwell Park mother Cat Cowie collapsed and died at a church meeting last October, leaving behind her beloved husband and baby boy Ryan.
Mr Cowie, lead singer of local band Lower Coast Skies, turned to his music to pour out his feelings for his ‘’true love’’. The result is a heartfelt single, This Love, which will be released on iTunes in early April.
‘’Cat was the love of my life and it’s been hard but I’ve just had to keep it together for our son Ryan, now 10 months,’’ he said.
‘’We’d tried for four years to have a baby and we finally got our little miracle and she only got to spend five months with him. You never think something like this would happen to someone so young.
‘’After she died I wrote this song to honour her. And so, as I’d serenaded Cat on our wedding day nearly eight years ago with a song I’d written, I wanted to serenade her at her funeral too.
‘’I don’t know how I did it, how I managed to get up and sing over her coffin, but I did it and I know that’s how she would have wanted it.’’
Mr Cowie, 32, hopes the tribute to Cat will touch others also grieving the loss of a loved one.
‘’Since people have heard the song I’ve had a lot of people contact me online to tell me the song has connected with them as they’ve also lost someone they love,’’ he said.
‘’So if the song can help others, and give them some hope that there’s going to be another life for them, then that makes me feel good too.’’
Breno and Cat Cowie were well known and loved in the Stanwell Park community, and the sudden death of the bubbly 35-year-old gym instructor affected many.
Friends started an online fundraiser for Mr Cowie and his son, which has since raised nearly $95,000. A benefit night, A Night for Cat, will be held at Fairy Meadow’s Fraternity club on April 2.
The tribute song will be released as part of a four-track album also titled This Love. It’s his first solo outing since the band was formed in 2009. Lower Coast Skies consists of Dave Barker (lead guitar); Anthony Brennan (bass) and Michael Way (drums).
‘’The band has been so supportive – we all had babies last year so gigs have pretty much been on hold,’’ Mr Cowie said.
‘’So I’ve had time to write and two songs on the album are ones I’ve penned since Cat’s passing, and the other two are songs about her from Lower Coast Skies that I’d recorded with the band.’’
Mr Cowie hopes the songs will also be of some comfort to little Ryan, who is missing his mum. ‘’He’s only young but he still reaches out for the photos of Cat in our home’’.
