Description

Did you have an exciting break? Could it have been even more fantastical?! This low prep language activity is a twist on "what did you do on your summer vacation" and will have your Gr. 2-5 students excited to share what they did during their break from school.

The bonus caregiver handout can be used with students who need support in recalling events and contains language to help you avoid the "one-upping" of vacations. Please be sensitive when students are comparing lifestyles!

To prep:

  • Send home a copy of the caregiver letter 1-2 days in advance (optional)
  • Print three blank postcards for each child.

For students:

  • Write 1-3 sentences about something they did NOT do during break on one postcard.
  • Write 1-3 sentences about something you DID do on this break on two postcards.
  • Sign your name on each card.
  • Cut out all of the cards, and add an illustration to the back of each.

Once the postcards are complete, allow classmates to share them. Can they pick out which postcard is the fake? Have them stamp or initial what they think is the fake card in the address area. How many classmates were tricked?

Ideal for back-to-school, but can also be used after any break. This fun activity can also be used to contrast fiction and non-fiction or used to target letter writing skills.
