Good Morning <<First Name>>,

Welcome to the September 2014 edition. The Schimberg Group's goal is to provide insight, information, and visual stimulation for all things architecture and interior design related. There is something for everyone, so please enjoy.

TOPIC OF THE MONTH
IS IT MODERN OR CONTEMPORARY?

"At their most literal, 'contemporary' is the architecture being produced now, the architecture of the moment. 'Modern' architecture breaks with the past — specifically the traditional styles of before the Industrial Revolution."
-John Hill, Houzz Contributor

Simply put, modern architecture is typically white with very straight lines and squares or rectangles as the major choice of shape. It is reminiscent of the International Style of architecture, the design goal allowing the building to be placed anywhere in the world, no matter of context. It juxtaposes solid masses with glass and creates a more stark and rigid environment, both outside and inside.

Contemporary architecture incorporates modern lines as a base, but often infuses other shapes to ‘warm up' the architecture. Different materials are used to create color compositions, warmth and textures.  Multiple architectural styles can be made contemporary, such as British West Indies, Key West and Modern.

DESIGN TIP OF THE MONTH
Ditch the Carpet for Painted Concrete Floors
Pulling up old carpet and painting the concrete below is a great option for a cleaner floor surface. The color possibilities are limitless and the project is budget friendly. It is important to prepare the surface thoroughly for a long-lasting finish and professional look. There are many tutorials on how to tackle this task on your own. Check out a great tutorial here.
