Volunteer Houston

Volunteer Houston is Houston’s sole referral service connecting volunteers to a broad spectrum of diverse nonprofit organizations. With 40 years of volunteer management experience, our staff supports 1,200 Community Partners in developing and hosting over 1,000 volunteer projects each month around the city. We provide our Community Partners with opportunities to increase their impact by connecting them with their passions.

Volunteer Houston Community Partners can expect:

  • Access to 32,000 Volunteers Annually – Fulfill mission-critical initiatives by tapping into our huge volunteer base.
  • Background Checks – Work with Verified Volunteers to share background checks in our region and increase care to our most vulnerable populations.
  • Training and Support - Learn and master volunteer management practices through our training courses, consulting services and workshops.
  • Networking Opportunities – Join a network of over 1,000 nonprofit, civic and education-based institutions around the city.
  • Increased Visibility - We highlight and recognize our Community Partners on our website, through our newsletter and at city-wide events.

Volunteer Houston’s 40th Birthday Celebration and Volunteer Fair

Purpose of the Event:

To celebrate Volunteer Houston delivering 40 years of service to the Houston community, provide an opportunity for 50 nonprofits to market their organizations and recruit new volunteers, and demonstrate Volunteer Houston’s new volunteer database.

Activities:

  • Volunteer Fair: 50 nonprofit organizations will have booths at the event where they will recruit new volunteers and conduct small hands on service projects.
  • Large Service Project: Attendees will create holiday cards to benefit the Volunteer Houston Holiday Project.
  • Giveaways: Each nonprofit will have their own giveaways and handouts. Each person that attends the event will be entered into a drawing for prizes such as a $250 gift card to Gallery Furniture.
  • Database Demos: Volunteer Houston will be demoing its volunteer database and show individuals how to use it to its full potential.
  • Recognition Ceremony: There will be a short ceremony at 1:30 p.m. where former board members and special guests will be recognized. A proclamation will be read at this time.
  • Kid’s Zone: There will be a small area that offers a few kid-friendly activities such as face painting, balloon animals and bounce house.
  • Food: Carnival type food will be available for purchase. Additionally, as with every good birthday, there will be plenty of cake!

A Visit from Saint Nicholas

Quick Facts about A Visit from Saint Nicholas

Established in 1987, “A Visit from Saint Nicholas” annually provides Title 1 Houston and Bay Area K-2nd Graders more than 8,000 backpacks filled with educational toys and books.

Please contact us if you’re available on Wednesday, November 19 or December 5, 2014, to help with backpack stuffing and distribution, respectively.

Also, new this year will be a fun volunteer project for students! Students will create seed balls that they will donate back to their school.

Our hope is that the students will learn about giving back to their community and make the holiday more meaningful.

Monetary and in-kind donations are also needed. Please review our sponsorship package and learn how you and your organization can help.

We’re making it easier for our community partners to engage the community! Our new volunteer kiosks were installed at the office. All Volunteer Houston community partners are invited to add their volunteer opportunities and/or coordinate volunteer projects for their organizations. If you’re a current Volunteer Houston community partner, please stop by our offices and give the kiosk a test run.

Volunteer Houston's 30th Annual Houston Service Awards

Since 1974, Volunteer Houston has been honoring individuals and groups who give of their time and talent to make a significant impact to their communities.

This year, the Houston Service Award was held on May 15 at the Bayou Events Center. High-spirited emcees, Greg Hurst and Melanie Lawson, treated the roughly 430 in attendance to an afternoon of delight. Keynote speaker, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, gave a heartfelt address about how service was instilled in him from a young age and received the Impact Award for his enormous philanthropic contributions to the Greater Houston region.
