BOX SCORE Box ScoreHOUSTON, Texas – Playing their final match of the regular season in Houston, it was only natural that three Lady Panthers from the Houston area would score goals Friday as Prairie View A&M defeated Texas Southern 3-0.
The Panthers officially clinched second place on the Southwestern Athletic Conference table and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament with the win. The SWAC tournament will be held in Huntsville, Ala. next weekend.
Reina Mata (Houston, Texas/Aldine HS) gave the Lady Panthers all the cushion they needed in the seventh minute when she put a shot past Texas Southern goalkeeper Lilian Hernandez in the seventh minute. It was Mata's third goal of the season.
The Lady Panthers (9-7-1, 8-1-1 SWAC) stretched their lead after the interval when junior
Ashley Virgil (Freeport, Texas/Brazosport HS) and freshman
Reina Cruz (Houston, Texas/Nimitz HS) scored their first goals of the season. Virgil struck in the 50th minute, while Cruz scored her first collegiate goal in the 86th minute.
Senior goalkeeper
Bianca Garza, also from the greater Houston area (Nederland, Texas/Nederland HS) made two saves en route her fifth shutout of the season.
The postseason SWAC tournament starts Nov. 6. More information about the Panthers trek to a conference championship will be available in the upcoming week.
