CANTON, N.Y. -- SUNY Canton is under lockdown due to threats made to students using social media.

Those on campus are urged to take shelter and lock the door. Those planning on traveling to campus are urged to stay away.

All classes for the remainder of the day have been cancelled.

The lockdown comes on the heels of a second threat made today against the campus. SUNY Canton students notified campus police between midnight and 1 a.m. that a threat was posted on the social media site Yik Yak, the Watertown Daily Times reported.

According to WWNY in Watertown, the original threat stated: "This is a message to all SUNYCanton students,if you valve your life do not go to class tomorrow,I plan on killing myself but before that I plan taking as many of you worthles piles of crap,be ready."

Both threats were made on Yik Yak, the school said in a statement.

In a statement issued around 9 a.m., after the first threat, SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran said there "no evidence at this point that the threat is either credible or imminent." and that classes and campus activities would continue as planned.

Yik Yak is a social media network that allows users to anonymously post and read other posts made within a close area.
