Dustdevils Host WTAM on Magical Night

Buffs edge Dustdevils to split season series

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International University eyed a season sweep over non-conference West Texas A&M on Wednesday at the TAMIU Soccer Complex after edging the Buffs, 2-1, on Sept. 7 on the road. The Buffs had other thoughts, shattering TAMIU's three-match winning streak with a 1-0 result.

"The match could have gone either way," TAMIU head coach Claudio Arias said. "We hit two different posts and made West Texas make some difficult plays – their goalkeeper made some very big saves. We beat them at their home and they returned that to us.

"We still have bigger goals within the Heartland Conference and the region. We are focused on those goals."

The match was a special night for TAMIU. It hosted the Kristine Meza Foundation in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, presenting the South Texas organization a donation at halftime. Senior captain and Dustdevils leading scorer Jovany Macias seized the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend as the climax of the intermission.

Macias led the Dustdevils in the match, launching six shots with a .500 shots on-goal percentage. The Dustdevils outfired the Buffs 14-7 – with a 6-4 advantage in shots on frame.

WTAM keeper Patrick Satorie nearly singlehandedly saved the Buffs to survival, completing six saves – many from close range.

TAMIU keeper Salomon Moctezuma completed three saves, but it was a 70th minute tap-in that escaped his sprawl.

The Dustdevils consistently built possession from their formidable backline of Juan Sebastian Ramirez, Cesar Guerrero, Norman Ramos and Robert Dominguez. The midfield of Christian Mendoza, Camilo Botero and Michael Iskander flexed its flow through to the triple-edged attack of Macias, Eduardo Gonzalez and Tayeb Ahmadi. Gonzalez rifled a pair of shots while Ahmadi and four others tried a shot apiece.

The Dustdevils remain in non-conference action on Saturday, hosting Midwestern State at 7:30 p.m. at the TAMIU Soccer Complex.
