The Macalester College men's basketball team was one of only 125 programs across all collegiate divisions to earn the 2013-14 Team Academic Excellence Award while two players were named to the Honors Court, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced this week.
The Scots were one of only three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) programs to be awarded the prestigious honor that recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2013-14 season.
In order to earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions must count the GPAs of all men's basketball student-athletes who competed during the season.In addition to the team honor, juniors
Hans Erickson (La Crosse, Wis. / Logan) and
Bert Yaffe (Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) were among 895 student-athletes from 335 colleges and universities to earn the NABC Honors Court distinction which recognizing those men's collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season. Erickson and Yaffe were among 13 student-athletes from five MIAC institutions to garner the award.
In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior with at least one year at his current institution and achieve a 3.2 cumulative GPA or higher at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season.
