VAS - call out for artists

VAS are now accepting online submissions for their 2015 Annual Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy, VAS:T 2015.
For the first time in VAS history an online submission process will enable the most ambitious, intriguing and innovative submissions from long time and first time open exhibitors, and from VAS members. The selection panel will seek out contemporary art and design works which consider and challenge the boundaries between fine art, design and applied arts. Artists, designers and makers are challenged to consider how their submissions might command the gallery space or be juxtaposed with other art forms and media by the curators to challenge the conventions of mixed exhibition displays. VAS;T 2015 will showcase how traditional media, techniques and skills, along with new and emerging technologies, inform visual ideas and contexts, and extend practices to make a distinctive eclectic show with a sense of drama, mischief and vitality.
Important Dates:
• Deadline for submissions midnight, Monday 17 November 2014 • Notification of primary selection 5 December 2014 • Hand in day for selected works Sunday 1 February 2015 • Notification of final selection Tuesday 3 February 2015 • Exhibition opens Sat 7 February 2015

Maker meet-ups run by Etsy

In Edinburgh & Glasgow, 8-9 Nov 2014
Etsy is an online marketplace for handmade and vintage. Our Community Programmes team is heading to Scotland for a weekend of maker events, 8-9 November 2014.
We will be holding free maker events on Saturday 8 Nov (The Gayfield Creative Space in Edinburgh) and Sunday 9 Nov (The Lighthouse in Glasgow) to introduce Etsy as an accessible and supportive route to market for Scottish designer-makers. Our wonderful Etsy 'Teams' (self motivated community groups of Etsy sellers) from Glasgow and Edinburgh will come along too, to meet newbies who might be interested in joining their local network.
Each meeting will feature three events:
1pm – Start on Etsy: Thinking about opening an Etsy shop? Get inspired and learn the keys to success with Etsy admin and local sellers.
2:30pm – Cake and chat: Join Etsy staff and local seller groups for cake and chatting! Meet other Etsy sellers in the area and find out about events and opportunities for the coming year.
3:30pm – Seller Meet Up: Existing sellers on Etsy are invited to stay for an hour of Q and A, discussing 2015 plans and how to optimise your existing Etsy shop.

The Material Culture - call for entries

The idea for this exhibition began with a dissertation topic on the subject of textiles in 16th and 17th century Britain in which textiles were valued in the highest possible respect and boasted by all as a symbol of status.
Famously, Charles I paid more for his clothing in ‘The Great Peece’ showing himself, his wife Henrietta Maria and their two children than he paid Van Dyke, the artist in a whole year.
Since that period, textiles practice has born descriptions such as craft and even ‘women’s work’, while art forms such as painting and sculpture have overtaken textiles in terms of prestige within the world of art. And yet, beyond traditional art, the high fashion industry is a beacon of wealth and status. But with the rise of technology and globalisation and with textile production occurring en masse though cheap labour and new machinery we beg to question where do textiles fit into our modern culture?
- How do we value their worth and the worth of material in our culture.
We are welcoming works from all disciplines, and are not restricted to textiles. Furthermore, we want to push the boundaries of textiles as a medium so contemporary and adventurous textile pieces will be very well received.
This will be an exhibition that evokes and answers questions but which also provokes thoughts and discussions on the place of material within our history and our even more importantly, our culture.
