Vogue: Cincy, Covington make Rust Belt 'shine again'

Cincinnati and Covington are among the cities leading the way in a Rust Belt "renaissance," according to Vogue magazine.

Vogue looked at five Rust Belt "boomtowns" they believe are making the Rust Belt — so named in the 1980s for the decline in the industrial Northeast and Midwest areas — shine again.

Among those selected alongside Cincinnati and Covington were Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Chicago, Illinois; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Detroit, Michigan.

The "best of Kentucky and Ohio merge at the border of Covington and Cincinnati," Vogue said.

"At their industrial peaks, Covington touted the title as the world's largest iron fence producer and Cincinnati became known as the largest manufacturer of carriages in the world," Vogue said.

It's those histories, Vogue said, that has fueled the "brimming art scene" now on the uptick in the area.

Vogue recommends staying at the 21c Museum Hotel across the street from the Aronoff Center in downtown Cincinnati, and at the Hotel Covington in Covington.

Eateries and drink destinations featured in the piece include Covington's Braxton Brewing Company's taproom, MainStrasse Village, Bouquet and Frida 602. On the Cincinnati side, the Nati in a Nutshell tour with Urban Adventures, Eckerlin Meats at Findlay Market and Graeter's Ice Cream received shout-outs.

Taft's Ale House, Salazar, Boca, Maplewood Kitchen and Bar and Sundry and Vice also got shout-outs from Vogue.

Cincinnati's "revitalized" Over-the-Rhine district, along with Rhinegeist Brewery, got a specific mention under Vogue's "What to Do" section.

In Covington, Vogue says Durham Department store, MainStrasse Village's "cobblestoned streets to explore eateries, shops and bars," the Goose Girl Fountain and Carroll Chimes Bell Tower are among the city's best attractions.
