Mystery | Mystery Woman Sleuth | Mystery Police Procedural

Deborah Lansing's sixteen-year old sister has disappeared; it's completely out of character for Ashley, a computer whiz. Deb, a fearless Search and Rescue flyer and former Army, looks up her former partner Gabe Montgomery; she knows he can be trusted. Gabe left the Army around the same time as Deb, and is now working as an undercover cop at a bar he purchased.

When Deb comes to Gabe with the news that her sister has vanished, it brings back terrible memories for Gabe, when eight years before, he witnessed a teenage girl shot to death and his world crashed around him. The student was one of several on her way to a math competition; her killer was never found and neither were her teammates.

As they start searching for Ashley, Gabe and Deb find out that other teenagers have also vanished. All of them are gifted students and they have another thing in common: they all played a video game called Point of Entry. What they begin to uncover has consequences that could have repercussions than they could ever have foreseen.

GAME OF FEAR is the third instalment in the Montgomery Justice series and is easily read as a stand-alone. Ms. Perini has crafted another spine-tingling suspense novel, and as her previous books, it's action packed and very much in tune with the times. It features very strong characters, but best of all is the female lead, Deb Lansing. I was positively ecstatic that the heroes in GAME OF FEAR are women. Gabe is a strong man in his own right; he helps Deb, but he relies on her decisions and she leads the way. It's a complete role reversal from what we are used to, and it's absolutely wonderful.

I also very much enjoyed the fact that, although it's obvious from the start that Gabe and Deb are attracted to each other, the author doesn't bog down this very modern thriller with sex scenes; the romance is merely a part of the story. GAME OF FEAR is another winner from Robin Perini!

SUMMARY

Brilliant kids from all over the country are disappearing—but no one knows why. Until now. In the cockpit, Search and Rescue pilot Deb Lansing is in control: her flight, her rules. But after the suspicious disappearance of her supersmart younger sister, she knows this is one rescue mission she can’t fly solo. She needs help. She needs Gabe Montgomery. An earth-shattering betrayal led former SWAT officer Gabe Montgomery to his current deep-cover assignment. But he trusted Deb Lansing with his life once before and she’d pulled him through. Now it’s his turn to repay the feisty redhead—even if it threatens to blow his covert op. As Deb and Gabe get closer to the answers—and closer to each other—their investigation reveals a startling pattern: gifted kids from all over the country are going missing after mastering the popular video game Point of Entry. And when bodies turn up, the new lovers will face a ruthless fiend known only as the Warden. Will they be able to find Deb’s sister, or will she vanish like so many others? Another pulse-pounding Montgomery Justice novel proves that a Montgomery man always plays to win.
