Deborah Lansing's sixteen-year old sister has disappeared;
it's
completely out of character for Ashley, a computer whiz.
Deb, a fearless Search and Rescue flyer and former Army,
looks up her former partner Gabe Montgomery; she knows he
can be trusted. Gabe left the Army around the same time as
Deb, and is now working as an undercover cop at a bar he
purchased.
When Deb comes to Gabe with the news that her sister has
vanished, it brings back terrible memories for Gabe, when
eight
years before, he witnessed a teenage girl shot to death
and
his world crashed around him. The student was one of
several
on her way to a math competition; her killer was never
found
and neither were her teammates.
As they start searching for Ashley, Gabe and Deb find out
that other teenagers have also vanished. All of them are
gifted students and they have another thing in common:
they
all played a video game called Point of Entry. What they
begin to uncover has consequences that could have
repercussions than they could ever have foreseen.
GAME OF FEAR is the third instalment in the Montgomery
Justice series and is easily read as a stand-alone.
Ms.
Perini has crafted another spine-tingling suspense novel,
and as her previous books, it's action packed and very
much
in tune with the times. It features very strong
characters,
but best of all is the female lead, Deb Lansing. I was
positively ecstatic that the heroes in GAME OF FEAR are
women. Gabe is a strong man in his own right; he helps
Deb,
but he relies on her decisions and she leads the way. It's
a
complete role reversal from what we are used to, and it's
absolutely wonderful.
I also very much enjoyed the fact
that, although it's obvious from the start that Gabe and
Deb
are attracted to each other, the author doesn't bog down
this very modern thriller with sex scenes; the romance is
merely a part of the story. GAME OF FEAR is another
winner from Robin
Perini!
