Game Recap: Softball |

Patriots Take Two from Trinity

WASHINGTON D.C. - The University of Valley Forge Softball Team earned its first sweep of the season in a double-header against Trinity Washington University on Friday, April 17th.  Prevailing 13-6 and 19-3, the Patriots were able to provide a lot of offense throughout the whole line-up.

In game one, the Patriots got off to a fast start, scoring 4 runs in the opening inning.  After tallying two more runs in the second, Trinity responded with two runs of their own, trailing 6-2 after the 2nd inning.  A few innings later, with the Patriots leading 8-5 in the 5th, Amanda McGinness hit her first home run of the season to make it 9-5!

Still holding an advantage, 9-6, going into the 7th and final inning, the bottom of the Patriots line-up came up with some big hits.  Rachel Gomez hit an RBI single, followed by a Kelsey Morrison RBI single.  Then, Samantha Reed hit an RBI single of her own to give the Patriots a 13-6 lead.  It was more than enough for pitcher Rachel Daniels, as she held down the Trinity line-up in the bottom half of the inning to give the Patriots a game one victory.

Samantha Reed went 3 for 4 from the plate, while Rachel Daniels and Sarah Brugere each went 2 for 4.  Daniels also pitched a complete game, giving up only 3 earned runs.

Game two was much of the same from the Patriots line-up.  Freshman Naomi Thompson went an incredible 4 for 5 from the plate, including a single and double in the opening inning to help the Patriots jump out to an early 6-0 lead.  Trinity responded with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning, but that didn't stop the Patriots from staying on the gas pedal.  They scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning and 7 runs in the 3rd inning to take a 16-3 lead.  Defensively the Patriots were solid, not giving up another run for the remainder of the game.  The final score was 19-3.

In addiiton to pitching another complete game, Rachel Daniels was the only other player with multiple hits, going 2 for 3 from the plate.

On Saturday, the Patriots hosted St. Joseph's College in double-header action.  The Patriots were defeated 2-10 and 1-13.

The next game for the Patriots will be on Sunday, April 19th at 2PM in a re-match against Trinity Washington.

Go Patriots!
