After dozens of convictions are thrown into doubt, DA Hynes agrees to take a new look
Two months after a high-profile 1990 murder case he investigated was thrown out, dozens more convictions associated with a retired New York City police detective are under review, prosecutors said Saturday.
About 50 cases worked by Detective Louis Scarcella will be reopened by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit, a spokesman confirmed. Prosecutors are casting a critical eye as Scarcella’s work after a judge threw out the conviction of a man accused of killing a Brooklyn rabbi.
A man who answered a phone listed under the name Louis Scarcella wouldn’t comment Saturday, but Scarcella told the New York Times that he didn’t expect prosecutors to find anything. The Times first reported the investigation.
