Social Media Threat Leads to School Investigation

Social media outlets have teenagers more connected than ever, but that can sometimes lead to problems. Late last week, Broken Arrow Public Schools received word of a threat made on smartphone app, Yik Yak.

The app allows users to post anonymously with messages showing up to other users in their immediate area or at their school. Many people we spoke with, say it provides a platform for cyber-bullying as well as threats.

Officials with Broken Arrow Public Schools say, they are working to teach students about responsibly posting on social media. "As administrators and teachers, we ask that parents also - just be aware of what your kids are doing online. Just like you would teach them to use a car responsibly, teach them what they need to know to be responsible online, as well," said Shelli Holland-Handy with BA Public Schools.

The threat was investigated by school officials and found to have no merit.
