Rhinoceros attack in Nepal leaves one dead six injured

An escaped rhinoceros has terrorised a small Nepalese town after escaping from a nearby national park, goring a woman to death and leaving six injured.
Locals filmed the runaway rhino chasing people through the main market and bus station in Hetuada, 50 km south of capital Kathmandu, on Monday morning.
The rhino can be seen haring up a road in pursuit of a group of motorcyclists, while a mob of people chase after the horned animal, The Guardian reports.
A 61-year-old woman was killed by the rhino, while at least six others were injured.
"The whole town is terrorised by this animal. It even entered the local hospital, forcing terrified people to jump over the fences," government administrator Ram Prasad Thapaliya said.
Local resident Krishna Poudel said he was sitting on the rooftop of his house when he saw the rhino running after a motorcycle on the road below.
"I have never seen a rhino come into our area. Sometimes elephants do come," Mr Poudel said.
A police spokesman said teams with tranquilizer guns had been called in to try and catch the animal without harming it.
"We have contacted technicians to see if we can sedate the rhino. Our focus is to rescue it," the spokesman said.
It is not known if Hetuada police were successful.
The rhino is thought to have escaped from Chitwan National Park, a world heritage site on the outskirts of Hetuada known for its one-horned Indian Rhinoceroses.
Rhinos can weigh up to 1400kg and have been recorded running as fast as 54km/h.
Nepal, once home to thousands of one-horned rhinos, is now said to have just 534, with their numbers plunging in the last past century due to poaching and human encroachment on their habitat.
But steps are being taken to protect the species, with Nepalese authorities twice recognised by conservation experts in recent years for going a full year without poaching incidents involving tigers or rhinos.
