DES MOINES, Iowa – A real estate company immediately shut down all open houses across Iowa after one of its agents received a threat.
“The caller said they intended to bring harm to the agent and that they’d be seeing her later in the day,” said Brian Wentz, CEO for Keller Williams Realty Greater Des Moines. “I’ve been an agent for 20 years and this is not even close to the first time where we’ve had something like this happen. Yet, this one was very specifically concerning.”
Company leaders immediately began shutting down all scheduled open houses for the day, pulled their agents off of the streets and increased police presence around the corporate office.
This isn’t the first time realtors have been the target of violence.
In 2011, 27-year-old Ashley Okland was killed while showing a home in Iowa. A few years earlier, in 2006, Sarah Anne Walker was stabbed 27 times inside a model home in Texas.
