Outsourcing uproar: San Diego’s pets deserve better
Animal services is not like trash collection
Regarding “County may outsource animal welfare services” (March 11): In memory of Hunter, Buddy and Fannie — dogs adopted from San Diego County shelters — I was disappointed in the rushed decision by the Board of Supervisors to outsource animal services.
Sworn humane law enforcement officers and those entrusted with information in the county’s database should be dedicated public employees who report to elected officials. It is a violation of trust to contract that out.
Philanthropists and small donors’ funds built the central shelter. What will become of those donations? This decision does a disservice to people and animals. I hope this ill-advised decision can be reconsidered.
At least retain licensing and law enforcement functions with county government. Outsourcing helpless animals is not the same as outsourcing trash collection.
