The Recreation Passport may be the most affordable gym membership available.

Walking, hiking, running, bicycling, cross-country skiing and paddling are all ways to stay in shape, while taking advantage of Michigan's great outdoors! The varied terrain just might help you burn more calories, and the natural scenery and fresh outdoor air may entice you to stay active longer.

For just $11, the Recreation Passport is your very own key to exploring 103 state parks, state-designated trails and staffed boat launches. Plus, it's the easiest way to support and protect these resources for the next generation. Watch this 30-second video to learn more.

Yellow phones connect campers in off-season

visitor talking on yellow phone

For those seeking smaller crowds and cooler weather, visitors will enjoy camping during the off-season (Labor Day through Memorial Day).

During this time, park staff moves out of contact stations and into campgrounds and onto trails for maintenance and safety checks. Campers who need to register for a campsite or check in for their stay are asked to use the yellow phones located outside campground offices.

Pick up the yellow phone and it will automatically connect you to the reservation call center during the following hours: Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. You can find available campsites, register for your stay and pay by cash or credit card.

If you arrive after call center hours, please check the campground office window for information on site availability and instruction on how to self-register. If you are staying at a rustic location where there is no yellow phone, please follow instructions posted at the booth or kiosk for information on registering for your stay and using self-registration envelopes.

Enjoy peak Michigan fall foliage throughout October

fall color map

With the unusually warm temperatures this fall, the peak of Michigan fall foliage was delayed and is expected to peak throughout October as temps cool.

Since residents and visitors are never more than a half-hour away from a Michigan state park, state forest campground or state-designated trail or waterway, camping, hiking, mountain biking, fall fishing, hunting or seeking out a spectacular view is in your forecast.

Check out Pure Michigan’s fall travel season map to help you plan your fall getaway. To make a camping reservation in a state park, visit midnrreservations.com or take advantage of first-come, first-served camping in rustic state forest campgrounds.

Forests provide the backdrop for outdoor recreation

paper cuts

Forests are a haven for birds and animals and they help keep our air and water clean. Besides that, they provide wood products we use every day!

Those messages are at the heart of a new public information campaign sponsored by the DNR’s Forest Resources Division. The series of four, 30-second video ads featuring unique papercuts (crafted from Michigan-made paper) and digital animation. You can find them at michigan.gov/forestsforalifetime.
