Charlize Theron reopens a cold case in 'Dark Places' trailer

You’ve met Gillian Flynn’s Amazing Amy on screen in Gone Girl. Now, meet Libby Day in the trailer for Dark Places, another adaptation of a Flynn mystery.

Charlize Theron stars as Libby, whose mother and two sisters were massacred in the 1980s. Libby’s older brother Ben (played as an adult by Corey Stoll) went to prison for the murders, and Libby has remained certain of his guilt until she falls in with true crime obessives (one of whom is played by Nicholas Hoult) that make her start questioning her past. The novel flashes back and forth in time between the events leading up to the killings and adult Libby’s reexamination of Ben’s youth. Christina Hendricks plays Libby and Ben’s mother Patty, while Tye Sheridan plays the younger Ben. The trailer, if you know the book, has some spoilerific elements—hello, Diondra—though the twists aren’t quite as big as those in Flynn’s Gone Girl.

At the recent Writers Guild Awards, Flynn told EW on the red carpet that the film was a “love project” for director Gilles Paquet-Brenner. “He wanted to get it so right,” she said. “He’s a Parisian so he’d never been anywhere in the middle of the United States. He flew to Kansas City where I’m from so I could drive him all around the countryside and everything. I made him eat Velveeta, just so he could understand. He was not happy about it.”

You’ll notice that the trailer has French subtitles. There is no U.S. release date for the film yet, but it opens in France April 8.
