J. K. Rowling Smacks Down Westboro Baptist Church Bigots in One Perfect Tweet
This story ventures into the realm of "you can't make this stuff up." It happened in a land where fictional worlds and real ones collide, and the idiots at the Westboro Baptist Church don't seem to be able to tell the difference.
In celebration of the overwhelming approval of gay marriage in Ireland, Harry Potter creator J. K. Rowling joked that Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore and Lord of the Rings wizard Gandalf could finally get married.
The Westboro haters tweeted that they planned to picket that ceremony.
They were not being ironic. Nor is there any sign that they have a sense of irony, (not to mention decency.)
In response, Rowling tweeted:
[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"600263","attributes":{"alt":"","class":"media-image","height":"198","style":"font-size: 12px;","typeof":"foaf:Image","width":"480"}}]]
As brilliant as it was, one Twitter user complained her tweet gave WBC publicity,The Gay Star News reported: and that 'giving them attention is counterproductive.'
'I don't care about WBC,' she said in response.
'I think it's important that scared gay kids who aren't out yet see hate speech challenged.'
Rowling has repeatedly shown she is in favor of LGBTI rights, ever since she revealed the headmaster of Hogwarts was gay - although that was never made explicitly clear in the novels.
