Find your voice... write!

Write = express = voice = self-knowing

Image: Kids writing at Chaffee
Thanks to the Chaffee Art Center in Rutland I recently had the opportunity to work with a group of 11-14 year olds who over the course of our ten hours together spun out stories, penned their own prompts, made mandalas, and even scribbled as they tuned into their emotional selves. (There was also much Harry Potter banter as they imagined alternative endings or what they would do if they could visit Hogwarts.)

The class was called "The Magical Pen: Personal Writing to Find Your Voice," but in reality it could be called "To KEEP Your Voice." Children of this age, particularly girls, are prone to losing touch with their innate intuition and can begin to disconnect from their wise selves. They can begin to not know what they know. This means, as adults we can question -- or not even recognize -- our own emotional experiences; we are disconnected from our bodies and, what I call, body-voice. (This phenomenon is the subject of Carol Gilligan's books In a Different Voice and Birth of Pleasure.)

Encouraging teenagers to keep a journal where they can stay in touch with what they feel, both emotionally and physically, is a tool that can help them be more confident, do better in school, and make smart decisions for themselves as they grew as individuals, while giving them a safe, non-judgmental place to express themselves, while relieving anxiety. (To read some articles I've written about kids and journaling, see this Examiner.com page and this post at the Transformative Language Arts Network blog.)

And it can work for you too! This coming month I will be offering two workshops for adults who want to reclaim their voice...

Joanna: headshotWHERE'S JOANNA? Summer-Fall Edition
This time last year I was buried in words, editing my memoir in preparation to send it off to an agent. This spring and summer has been very, very different. While I've hardly written a word, I've been helping others write theirs. I'm so grateful that, so far, this year has been the busiest I've had as a presenter, facilitator, and coach. THANK YOU to everyone who has attended my classes and presentations, who has
recommended them to others, and to those who have hired me.
Here's where you can find me over the next few months:

>>Two offerings of The Yoga of Journaling: Creating a Writing Practice for Self-Care and Connection (Click here for full description):

>>Thursdays, October 8 and November 5; 6-7:30: Lower Your Stress, The Write Way Rutland Regional Medical Center, Leahy Community Health Education Center: FREE. Call 802.772.2400 or email Community Education.
What people are saying...

"Yoga of Journaling provided a unique opportunity for both new and seasoned writers to express our thoughts in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Joanna's innovative prompts lead to a wealth of personal discovery."

"Joanna creates an environment where I am free to let my thoughts flow and my voice to be heard, and I come away feeling supported and validated. It is important work, and I feel fortunate to know Joanna, and to have been a part of her writing groups."
