McBride Offers Career Night as Griffins Sweep Lady Rams

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/24/2014) – While establishing a new career and program high in points, 29.0, sophomore outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) led Chestnut Hill College to a crucial league victory with tonight's 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-15) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) triumph at Philadelphia University. The Griffins completed their first CACC sweep of their cross-city rival by hitting .243 (51K-14E-152TA) with 13 aces and four players recording double-digit digs.

Philadelphia University (12-11, 8-5) grabbed a comfortable advantage at the start of the match, building an 11-3 advantage before Chestnut Hill College (12-12, 7-6) awoke. Beginning with defense, the Griffins slowed the Lady Rams to a 16-16 tie and kept the score equal as late as 23-23 only to surrender the set's final two points on errors, 25-23 (0-1). The Lady Rams used the momentum to get ahead early in the second set, 5-1, but the Griffins soon found their rhythm and tied the set at 8-8 before separating late for a 25-18 win, 1-1. Leading the whole way in the third set, the Griffins gained the upper hand on a 25-17 win, 2-1. And as a result, they would take the fourth set with moderate resistance, putting the Lady Rams away with a decisive 25-15 spread, 3-1.

Three Lady Rams recorded at least ten kills as freshman middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and senior middle hitter Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa.) each totaled 12 kills while junior middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y.) recorded 11 kills. Taking turns running the offense, sophomore setter Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa.), and junior setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa.) combined for 43 assists, 15 and 28 respectively. Meanwhile, freshman outside hitter Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill.) and sophomore defensive specialist Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa.) collaborated on 52 digs with respective totals of 25 and 27 digs.

McBride scored seven of the Griffins 13 aces while recording a block, an assist, and her sixth double-double of the season with a season-high 21 kills and 15 digs. Totaling 29 points in all, she now owns the Griffins top four scoring performances. Joining her on the Griffins frontline assault was junior outside hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.), who finished the evening with 12 kills and two digs. Junior setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) offered a kill, 37 assists, 14 digs, and a block while freshman defensive specialist Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.), two aces and 12 digs, and sophomore libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.), three aces and 20 digs, combined for five aces and 32 digs.

The women's volleyball team returns to Sorgenti Arena tomorrow, Saturday, October 25, to host Bloomfield College in a 6:00 p.m. CACC contest.
