Dateline Awards: An Introduction

Dear Fellow Journalist:

After an extraordinary year for our profession, the Washington, D.C., Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is pleased to announce our 2018 Dateline Awards Contest.

We’re now accepting applications. Membership in SPJ is not a requirement to enter, but this is a good time to point out the many benefits our organization provides for professional journalists. For full details on who we are and what we do, visit: About SPJ-DC.

The 2018 Dateline Awards contest is open to print and broadcast media outlets and freelancers throughout the D.C. metropolitan area. It’s easy to enter, with a broad range of categories and opportunities for just about every journalistic medium.

The Washington, D.C., Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is one of SPJ’s largest—and SPJ matters more than ever today. As the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, SPJ remains dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and promoting high standards of ethical behavior.

Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ believes that the free flow of information is vital to a well-informed citizenry, and we put that belief into action through the daily work of about 7,000 members. We’re committed to the task of recognizing, inspiring and educating current and future journalists through professional development, while advocating to protect the freedom of speech and the press that the First Amendment guarantees and our democracy demands.
