Public Power Week is Oct. 4-10
The Town of Wake Forest and Wake Forest Power are joining more than 2,000 not-for-profit utilities in celebrating Public Power Week Oct. 4-10. As part of this annual week-long celebration, the town and Wake Forest Power are offering several special events and activities, including a Public Power Week Word Search Contest, Customer Appreciation Day & Energy Expo and more. Every Wake Forest Power residential customer who signs up for Pay-As-You-Go service during the week of Oct. 4 will receive a $50 credit. Everyone who participates in the word search contest will be entered in a drawing to win free electricity in October. For complete information, visit our website


"Joyner Park After Dark" Canceled 
Joyner Park After Dark, scheduled for Oct. 3-4, has been canceled due to wet conditions and the threat of inclement weather. No makeup date has been announced. Everyone who registered will receive a full refund. For more information, email Jennifer Rall.


Get Your Town of Wake Forest Wall Calendar
The Town of Wake Forest is making it easier than ever for area residents to keep track of popular town events thanks to a new 14-month wall calendar. T he free calendar offers a comprehensive listing of town events scheduled between November 2015 and December 2016. The calendar also lists the various holidays the Town of Wake Forest will observe during that period.  The calendar is filled with dozens of photos featuring area residents enjoying local festivities ranging from the Mardi Gras Street Festival and Meet in the Street to the Halloween Spooktacular and Wake Forest Christmas Parade - and everything in between.  The calendars are free and available at the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., and other area locations.

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department will sponsor its annual Halloween Spooktacular on Thursday, Oct. 22, from 4:30 - 8:30 pm at the Flaherty Park Community Center, 1226 N. White St. Admission is free!

Angel Tree Applications Now Accepted
Hope House and BJ's Angel Tree program application process will start on Oct. 1 and go through Oct. 24. We will be accepting applications from parents with children from ages newborn to 13 years old at 334 N. Allen Road , Wake Forest on Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 1 pm. Wake Forest Civitan Club Pecan Sale
The Wake Forest Civitan Club is once again pre-selling its delicious and plump first crop pecans and other specialty nuts. A pound bag of shelled pecans is $12. The Wake Forest Community Calendar is a comprehensive listing of upcoming local events submitted by non-profit groups and organizations in our area. The Town of Wake Forest provides the Community Calendar as a free service and invites local non-profits, including churches, civic clubs and other community organizations, to submit their events for inclusion on the calendar - according to our detailed submission guidelines. The Community Calendar is typically updated each week on Thursday or Friday. Event announcements received at least one week prior to the event will be included for publication in The Week Ahead. Hope House Weekly Food Pantry
Thursdays; 1 pm
Hope House, 334 N. Allen Road
Every Thursday Hope House picks up food from the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina to give out to the community. Vegetables, individual fruits, cut fruit, salad packages and breads are the staples. Occasionally we have meat, eggs, fruit juice and milk. We give the items out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Open Auditions for "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever"
Thursday, Oct. 1; 6 pm
Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 S. Brooks St.
Forest Moon Theater, Wake Forest's Community Theater, will hold open auditions for its upcoming  production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Performance dates are Dec. 10-13 (seven performances in four days). The cast includes 12 males and 15 females, ages 5-65 (eight are adult roles). Audition forms must be completed and signed by a parent if the actor is under age 18. Forms are available on the Forest Moon Theater website and at registration before the auditions. Please arrive as early as 5:30 to complete your paperwork, if needed. Wake Forest Woman's Club

The Wake Forest Woman's Club, an all volunteer non-profit community service organization, meets at the Wake Forest Community House, 133 W. Owen Avenue. The monthly meetings held the first Thursday of each month (September - May) begin with a social at 6:30 pm followed at 7:00 pm by a community service program and business meeting. The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts hosts free, movie showings at 7 pm on the first Friday of each month. The featured movie in October will be "X-Men: Days of Future." The film is rated PG-13. We're encouraging everyone who attends to come dressed as your favorite super hero! Free and open to the public, First Friday Flix movie screenings feature a variety of film favorites and genres, including comedies, dramas, thrillers and more, often with a seasonal or historical theme. Concessions, including popcorn and soft drinks, will be available for purchase. Loose Leaf Collection Resumes
Monday, Oct. 5
Wake Forest
The Town of Wake Forest's annual loose leaf collection program resumes Monday, Oct. 5, and will continue through mid-March. Wake Forest limits the amount of yard waste and leaves it collects weekly at each residence to four cubic yards (approximately one pickup truck load), so residents are urged to plan their cleanup accordingly. The town does not collect stumps or clearing debris from lots and will not pick up debris placed at the curb by private contractors. Leaf collection is performed weekly according to the town's yard waste collection schedule, but the schedule may be affected by leaf volume and weather conditions. Wake Forest residents can track the progress of leaf collection crews by calling the Leaf Collection Hotline at 919-435-9582. The hotline is updated each weekday morning by 8 a.m. with information concerning where crews will be working that day. Leaf mulch is available upon request from October through March. Each delivery is approximately 20 cubic yards. To request a free leaf mulch delivery, contact Betty Pearce at 919-435-9570 or [email protected] .  Loose leaf collection ends Friday, March 18, 2016. Area residents are invited to attend the 9th Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony on Monday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. The service will be held in Centennial Plaza, in front of the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., to honor James R. Weiss. Members of Weiss' family have been invited to participate in the ceremony which will include patriotic songs, special remarks, a memorial wreath laying and the ceremonial flag-raising by members of the Wake Forest High School JROTC. Divorce Care & Divorce Care for Kids

Wake Forest Baptist Church has begun its fall sessions of Divorce Care and Divorce Care for Kids. Each series runs for 13 weeks from 6:30-8:30 pm on Monday evenings. Divorce Care helps adults with the many painful emotions and challenges that come with divorce. Divorce Care for Kids is for children ages 5-12, using games, music, stories, videos and discussion to help kids process what's happening and move forward. Audiences may already know Ms. Poly and Ms. Ester, the wacky Gabardine Sisters and their super-duper star puppet Bartlet. These longtime entertainers performed for several years at the former Kazoom Children's Theater in downtown Raleigh, and now they're making regular appearances at the Renaissance Centre. Storytelling, music and puppetry are used to make these fast paced, interactive shows full of mayhem, a delightful experience for young children and you never know who might visit their stage! Each month boasts a different show theme. These shows are geared to children ages 3-7. Tickets are $5 per person (plus tax) and can be purchased online or at the Renaissance Centre Box Office. Public Power Week - Customer Appreciation Day

The Town of Wake Forest and Wake Forest Power are joining more than 2,000 not-for-profit utilities in celebrating Public Power Week Oct. 4-10. As part of this annual week-long celebration, the town and Wake Forest Power will host Customer Appreciation Day on Oct. 8 at town hall. The lobby of town hall will be the scene of an energy savings and electric safety expo featuring hands-on demonstrations and representatives from Wake Forest Power, ElectriCities, Northern Regional Center, Resources for Seniors, ChurchNet, Wake County Human Services and more. All area residents are invited to attend and learn how to make your home more energy efficient and save money on your electric bill, avoid electric hazards and be safe around electricity. During the energy expo participants can also register to win over 30 special prizes donated by several local merchants. In addition, Wake Forest Power will serve free hot dogs and sodas beginning at 11 a.m. Wake Forest area residents are invited to come get them while they last. On the second Friday night of each month the streets of downtown Wake Forest come alive with food, merchants and music! Everyone is invited to come and experience the dining, art and retail merchants of downtown Wake Forest. Breast Cancer Awareness Day Cut-A-Thon

Creative Shears is partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of Wake Forest to sponsor a Breast Cancer Awareness Day Cut-A-Thon. Women haircuts are $20, while men's cuts are $10. The haircuts include a wash and cut only - no blowouts. All proceeds will go to Ms. Suhad, a single mother of two who is battling breast cancer. The event will include a raffle and bake sale. Harvest Moon Fundraiser Dance

Presented by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 187, the cost is $10 per person and $15 per couple. The Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce and Town of Wake Forest will hold an informative Candidates Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 6:30-8 pm in the Town Hall Board Chambers. All five candidates vying for Wake Forest Board of Commissioners seats will be present. There will be six live questions asked, and six written questions. The five candidates running for office are Chad Casale, Brian Clemson, Greg Harrington, Brian Pate, and Anne Reeve.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to 'changing the world, one child and one community at a time.' Its mission is "to serve children of the world". Purr Partners in a non profit feline rescue group. Every Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm we hold an adoption at the Wake Forest Pet Smart. We are in desperate need of funds to continue to rescue and rehabilitate cats and kittens that we get from high kill shelters.
