A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting Sunday of a Hamlin man, according to the Hamlin Police Department.

Sanpio Samrora Jr., 38, was being held at the Jones County Jail on Thursday in lieu of a $50,000 bail bond, according to jail records.

Warrants were issued Wednesday for Samrora on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, according to a news release from Hamlin police. Investigators found that Samrora had been at the residence of Lupe Romero when Romero was shot about 1:20 a.m. Sunday in the 600 block of Northeast Avenue B.

Another suspect, Oscar Rene Villarreal, 25, was arrested Tuesday after he confessed to the slaying, Hamlin Police Chief Bobby Evans previously said in a news release. Villarreal originally had presented himself as an eyewitness to the shooting and had accused two other men — one of whom was arrested — of the crime.

Villarreal was in the Jones County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

All charges against the man originally arrested in connection with the shooting have been dropped, according to Jones County District Attorney Joe Edd Boaz.

Boaz asked Judge Brooks Hagler to recall the murder warrant at the request of law enforcement, he said in an email.

Romero died in the hospital shortly after the shooting.

His body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy.
