RAAF's new jet MB-326H, Macchi jet trainer
At Avalon airfield, Victoria, senior service and civilian personnel gathered at a ceremony held for the official handing over of the log books of the first Macchi off the production line in Australia. The Macchi was chosen by the RAAF as a jet trainer to replace the current aircraft in use: Winjeel and Vampire. The Italian designed Macchi is being produced under licence by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation's factory at Fisherman's Bend, Victoria. Senator Henty, Minister for Supply, in his speech, outlined the programme for the Macchi and then handed over the log books to Mr Howson, Minister for Air. After the ceremony the first Macchi was taken from the hangar and Squadron-Leader Max Loves flew the aircraft in a demonstration flight. A propellor driven Winjeel trainer and a Vampire flew in formation with the Macchi.
