People of Birmingham are being asked to nominate their favourite poem for the recording of BBC Radio 4’s Poetry Please event with Roger McGough as part of this year’s Birmingham Literature Festival.

All you need to do is choose a poem from the list of 25+ classics available, fill out the form on the website ( http://www.birminghamliteraturefestival.org/event/bbc-roger-mcgough/) and tell organisers why you like that particular poem.

Ten people who have nominated a poem will be invited to go to the recording on the 5th October at the Library of Birmingham and talk with poet Jo Bell about why they like the poem.

They will feature in the recording of the programme with Roger which will be broadcast later in the Autumn.

The Nominations, that span the range of classic wordsmiths from WB Yeats and Wordsworth through to Dylan Thomas and Seamus Heaney, are open until 5pm on Friday 26th September.

Roger McGough will introduces two special editions of Poetry Please at the festival.

The first will feature much loved poems inspired by the Midlands in all its modest splendour. The poets; Liz Berry, Jacqui Rowe, Bohdan Piesecki and Stephen Morrison-Burke will be giving new poems about the Midlands a first ever performance while also sharing the work of poets that have been inspired by the towns and cities, and the rivers and hills of the region.

The second recording of BBC Radio Four’s Poetry Please will consist of poems nominated in advance by people coming along to the recording.

Both editions of Poetry Please will be recorded for broadcast later in the Autumn on BBC Radio Four.
