Social media weighs in on opt-out reversal

The debate concerning school testing went outside Tuesday’s school board meeting. Here are some of the social media comments:

I am so relieved common sense and common core are back. I have watched my children thrive and never received a complaint even when I talked to them about it! Accountability is very important in this world and there seems to be a whole culture of people that have let that fall to the wayside. I’m so happy I don’t have to do private schools... At least for the time being.

“It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing” (Macbeth). Put this one in the overflowing “Lee School Board Follies” collection. I have rarely seen a more dysfunctional political institution. This was a self-inflicted wound that could have easily been avoided.

Bruce Diamond

(Mary) Fisher says the kids have been “her life’s work”! A great example to them succumbing to peer pressure!

This constant is nonsense. My high school in New Jersey did not subject us to this in the 1970s. We did take the IOWA basic skills tests 4 times in elementary school, and the tests were conducted over a couple of days, and not for the entire school day. We were not prepped to take the tests, which I think is proper. The schools focused on the basics, instead of politically correct garbage. The students need to know how to read and write proficiently first, as well as know basic math operations. If these are in place, then all students will be successful.

Only a fool pays an attorney to keep out of trouble and then ignores the advice. Yes, reverse the decision and lobby the state legislature to readdress their mandated high stakes testing.

They needed to have a plan in place to replace the standardized testing. They attempted to pull this off half cocked, and it would have ended up badly for everyone involved. Get a solid game plan in place and try again.

So weird... How do the kids in private schools and home school graduate from high school without the “standard” tests that are given so feverishly in public schools? If they can’t graduate or gain entrance into college, why are these children, not only getting a diploma, but being accepted into Ivy League universities all over the country?! Food for thought.

I attended the meeting. Those against Common Core outnumbered those for it by at least 10 to 1. I have to say more facts were presented by those For than those Against. Emotions were very strong, and I’d be willing to say Mary Fischer would have lost her recent election by a landfall based on her lack of conviction in this matter. I went to learn more, and now have a new found respect for Jean Dozier – IF she follows through with her anti-Common Core statements. If. Come on Don H. Armstrong. We need to see a plan. Oh, and SB Member Morgan showed herself as a back-room manipulator. Don’t trust her. Period.

The only way to help your children is by opting out. To ensure another vote happens and remains 3 things need to be done:

1. Make sure you have a viable plan.

2. Vote out of office Bd. members who voted to rescind vote today.

3. Make sure new Bd. members are in line and will remove the Superintendent if she does not follow Bd. policy.
