Lavarnway to Join Sea Dogs on MLB Rehab Assignment

Portland, Maine- Boston Red Sox first baseman Ryan Lavarnway is expected to join the Portland Sea Dogs on a Major League rehab assignment on Monday. Lavarnway is expected to start at first base and bat third in the lineup for the Sea Dogs in Monday's 7:00 PM game against the Binghamton Mets at Hadlock Field. Lavarnway will wear uniform # 40.

Lavarnway, 26 years-old, has been sidelined since May 30th with a left hamate fracture. He has appeared in four games with the Red Sox this season; going a combined 0-for-4. Lavarnway is hitting .265 in 44 games with the Pawtucket Red Sox this season.

In parts of four big league seasons, Lavarnway has compiled a .205 average (56-for-273) with five homeruns, and 34 RBI. He played in a career-high 46 games with the Red Sox during the 2012 season.

Lavarnway spent parts of the 2010 and 2011 season with the Portland Sea Dogs. In 99 games, he hit .284 (104-for-366), smacked 22 homeruns, and collected 77 RBI. Primarily a catcher with the Sea Dogs, the Burbank, California native threw out 34% of attempted base-stealers (16-of-47).

Lavarnway is the third Red Sox player to rehab with the Sea Dogs this season, joining pitchers Steven Wright and Felix Doubront. He will be the 34th player to make a Major League rehab assignment with the Sea Dogs and 28th as a Red Sox affiliate.
