Crane Inspector Tip

I can't take credit for this one, it was submitted by my good friend John Davis of the CCAA. For those of you that don't know John, he's not only 40+ year crane inspector but also a PE with a degree in structural engineering and one of the founding members of the CCAA. In other words, when John talks about cranes... I'm all ears!!!

The condition shown above was found on the turntable of a large mobile crane which had failed lifting a less than rated load. Whenever a crane surveyor observes welding that is obviously lacking in quality, applied to a structural member, he must indicate that it is a deficiency and refuse to accept the crane as suitable for service.
