Update: Stolen diamond, Cairns

A 29-year-old man has been arrested following investigations into the alleged theft of a diamond from a jewellery store on Lake Street in Cairns on Saturday.

Cairns detectives, working in conjunction with Victoria Police, took the man into custody at Melbourne International Airport yesterday as he was preparing to board an overseas flight.

He appeared before the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon where his extradition to Queensland was approved.

Detectives will escort the man back to Cairns later today.

He is expected to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with entering premises and stealing property of a value greater than $5,000.

Far North District Crime Coordinator, Detective A/Inspector Kevin Goan spoke with media earlier today in relation to the investigation to date, including the arrest and extradition of the alleged offender from Melbourne yesterday, as well as his anticipated court appearance tommorrow.

The stolen diamond is still outstanding and investigations are continuing.
