How can i stick to a workout routine during the holidays?

A: If your holiday entails travel that disrupts your regular fitness routine, commit to 15–20 minutes a day doing simple body-weight exercises. For example, hit the floor and plank it out for 90 seconds! —Tara Joiner, co-owner, Pink Barre, 996 Virginia Ave. NE. PinkBarre.com

Want a healthier fall? Start with your nose. Dry nasal membranes are an easy “in” for harmful germs and bacteria. ntown resident Cheryl Crawford is not your typical yoga teacher. While she was intimately familiar with the benefits of yoga—

increased flexibility and muscular strength, boosts to immunity and an overall increased sense of well-being—she began to notice something unexpected in her students that set her off on a new adventure. Cheryl explains that her own start in the practice of yoga began with some typical aches and pains associated with being a new mother. “My shoulders hunched up and my spine was in terrible shape after caring for triplets. I started yoga a few months after I gave birth and I loved feeling so calm and with much more strength.” She laughs, “It’s virtually impossible to breathe deeply and be uptight at the same time!”

WE TEACH KIDS TO FEEL AT HOME IN THEIR BODIES. THEY NEED TO KNOW

WHAT TO DO WITH FEELINGS OF ANXIETY THAT ARE

Not long after she began to teach yoga herself, Fernbank Elementary Principal Jason Marshall asked Cheryl to start a yoga program for the kids at his school. She began by teaching yoga to the teachers and staff, who received the training with a little skepticism at first, but warmed to it whole-heartedly after they experienced its effects. Soon, she developed a program to teach yoga to children at the school. “Amy Haysman, who teaches with me, also saw that the kids were very eager to learn about yoga.” She and Amy found that the students were so enthused that several of them asked if they could teach yoga to their peers at school. “They asked me to teach them how to ‘get grounded,’ and that’s how the name for our program—Go Grounded— came to be.” “Go Grounded is the methodology,” Cheryl explains. “It’s how we teach kids to feel at home in their body.” Cheryl says that kids need to know what to do with feelings of anxiety that are, unfortunately, a normal part of a child’s life.

Here are three ways you can join her movement.

“WHEN MY YOGA TEACHERS AND I COME INTO THE CLASSROOM, WE’RE OFTEN MET WITH CHEERING AND A CHORUS OF ‘HI, YOGA LADY!’ THE KIDS LOOK SO FORWARD TO THE CLASSES; IT’S REALLY MOTIVATING.”

“Go Grounded teaches kids to funnel negative habitual patterns, such as anger, frustration, worry and sadness, and transform them into higher energies of creativity, courage, compassion, strength and connection.” “Schools come to me if they feel we can help them,” says Cheryl. “I ask them, ‘What do you need? Who wants help?’ I explain, ‘These are things I’ve learned from other schools that I think can help you.’ Then we analyze how to help the teachers, as well as the students, in the school. I tell each student, ‘You have to feel all your feelings. You don’t have to be happy all the time. It’s normal to feel stressed—and there’s something you can do about it.’ They need to know what to do with their feelings.” Go Grounded gives kids tools to help them reflect before engaging in disruptive behavior in the classroom or choosing to act out negatively. And her program provides tools to help teachers become more responsive and aware, and less reactive and shame-oriented when kids do act out. Cheryl says laughter is what fuels all of her classes and helps her connect with children’s joyful nature. “Kids learn techniques that help them focus on gaining and holding energy so it can be used for the cool things they want to do—not to get sent to the suspension room,” Cheryl observes. “I ask the kids what they need. Kids will say how they actually feel and what they want. There’s a lot of conversation during the class, so we get to know them and keep them interacted.” Day to day, Cheryl likes to keep her life simple—with a lot of giggles. “I make time to goof around,” Cheryl muses. “I make sure I move and meditate daily. I love to walk my dog at Lullwater. I go out with friends and family to Farm Burger, the local farmer’s market and juice bars. I go places that uplift and inspire me.”

Honor Cosentino Vess and Nicole Cosentino are often asked how they do it. As the fourth generation of their family business, these sisters not only work with each other daily, but also with their parents, Ralph and Holly Berry Cosentino, in Berry Real Estate Design Build. “People either think that we’re crazy or they’re jealous,” Honor muses. She says the secret to making it work is keeping communication open. “That way, we still like each other at the end of the day!”

[

IN OUR DNA.

They also have a deep, shared appreciation for their company, founded by their great-grandfather, Frank Berry, in 1932. Initially an Intown real-estate firm, the company has evolved over the years, adding property management and, most recently, design-build services to their roster. Originally, Honor and Nicole never intended to work for the family business, except during summers when they would help with filing and other office-related tasks. “Our parents encouraged us to do what we love,” Honor notes. “We never even discussed having to work here.” Ultimately, Honor received a degree in architecture and Nicole studied fashion and interior design. But something drew the sisters back to work with their family. “We grew up in it,” Honor continues. “This business is in our DNA.” And now, she serves as lead project manager, design director and licensed contractor, while Nicole works as project coordinator and selections overseer. When they’re not fulfilling clients’ dreams, the sisters enjoy grabbing a bite at one of Decatur’s many fine restaurants, like The Square Pub, BeetleCat or Sushi Avenue Decatur. For them, it’s just one of the benefits of working and living in a community that has meant so much to their family for so many years.

A father of three, Kyle Waide and his wife, Christina, have lived in Atlanta for over a decade. He calls Decatur home and loves his close-knit Belvedere Park neighborhood. Fifteen months ago he stepped into his most important professional role yet— serving as CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB).

While his job is time consuming, he and Christina manage to carve out family time and, he says, “We are both passionate about Atlanta’s sports teams. It was bittersweet attending the Atlanta Braves’ last game at The Ted.” Now, he’s looking forward to Atlanta United’s soccer team joining the fold of Atlanta sports teams. On date nights, the couple loves Kevin Rathbun’s Steak (followed by a walk on the BeltLine).

HUNGER ISN’T A PROBLEM IN ISOLATION— IT’S CONNECTED TO OTHER PROBLEMS.

Somehow, in between donor meetings, trips to playgrounds and work at the office, Kyle finds time in his schedule to spiritually recharge. “We visit a couple of inspirational places that mean a lot to us. One is the Center for Civil and Human Rights, which speaks not only to our local Civil Rights Movement, but on a broader scale, too. I also love going to Old Ebenezer Church.”” He says he looks forward to quiet reflection there, so he can leave energized and ready to face the challenges ahead. A country boy from Mississippi at heart, he has a “deep appreciation and love for common folk” and relates to the struggles others face. But he is rooted here in Atlanta and is determined to help make our community a better place.

The mission of the Food Bank is to fight food insecurity in the metro Atlanta area. It’s one of the Southeast’s largest food banks, serving as a central procurement point for food distribution among 600 partner agencies in 29 counties. Kyle’s face isn’t new around the office—he has already spent three years leading the food bank’s operations. Now, in his new role, Kyle has seen a 14 percent growth in the number of meals provided by the ACFB to those in need. He knows there’s more work to do, though, to fight hunger-related issues in Atlanta. “Hunger is not a problem in isolation—it’s connected to other problems. It reflects the absence of opportunities for many families in Atlanta.”

Choosing a Charity: A Checklist for Giving During the holiday season, it’s easy to become filled with the giving spirit. Before you write that check, drop off that gift or schedule that volunteer day, be sure to take the time to vet the nonprofit of your choosing. We’ve compiled tips on finding worthy nonprofits that will make the most of your generosity.

Find an Organization to Support Your Mission Take time to think about what causes really matter to you. What issues tug at your heartstrings? Use those instincts as a guide to narrow down a few deserving nonprofits.

Established 2001

Set Your Standards Once you find a charity whose mission aligns with yours, think about criteria that are important to you. Is it important that the nonprofit keeps overhead costs as low as possible and uses the majority of donations to directly further its mission? Do you care less about overhead and more about statistics explaining the direct level of impact the organization makes?

Do Your Homework

Look for Red Flags Does the charity withhold information about their programs or finances? Do they use pressure tactics to garner donations?

Decide How You Want to Give Once you’ve vetted a nonprofit, decide on what type of giving suits you. Do you want to have a hands-on experience and volunteer time? Do you want to donate physical items? Do you want to make a one-time monetary donation? No matter what route you take, your efforts will help an organization you believe in do more good and support a cause that matters to you.

GuideStar offers records from 1.8 million nonprofits—access each charity’s IRS Form 990 to assess the charity’s income, spending, mission and executive salaries. The site isn’t a charity evaluator, but is an unbiased source of facts. Charity Navigator, on the other hand, does act as an evaluator. This website rates nonprofits based on a variety of criteria, including whether or not they properly registered as a 501(c)3 (nonprofit entity), length of existence, level of public support and more.
