In 1963, the year I was born, my italian father went on a fishing trip to MX.
While he was outta the country, my mother picked out a corner lot, and put down a deposit on a new tract home. When my father returned he was THRILLED. “ now I can have my Japanese garden!” He promptly hired a landscape architect who designed a garden that seemed like paradise to a small child. Black fences showcased specimen plantings, secret garden areas that had plenty of texture, lovely trees, rocks, bamboo, and my father was so proud of his dichondra “lawn”. Like velvet under my feet!
This early exposure informed my lifelong fascination w Japanese gardens.
They seem to come “naturally” to me.
This was a fantastic article.
The main theme was summed up for me in ONE SIMPLE SENTENCE:
“The achievement of balance while using hundreds of stones requires a great deal of persistence”. LOL!
My neighbors must think I’m crazy!
Some days arranging stones in my garden seems meditative, and on others the “work “ just feels like “ persistence”.. but for some of us , art is the necessary food for our souls. We cannot just “ walk on by”, without seeing the composition.
Thanks for a great article.
