Field Club Resident Interview

Residents: Erik and Christie Raymond

“A number of years ago we drew a circle on a map in Omaha of the area we wanted to live. That area was Field Club.”

Meet Erik & Christie Raymond. They have 6 children: Bryce (19), Luke (15), Alaynah (12), Alexis (10), Zoe (5), and Bo (3). They have lived on 3564 Poppleton since August of 2013.

Erik and Christie have been in Omaha for nearly 20 years, but did not grow up here. Erik, from the Boston area, and Christie, from Memphis, moved to Omaha while in the military in 1995. Soon after Omaha became home for their expanding family.

A number of years ago Erik and Christie drew a circle on a map of Omaha for their ideal spot. That spot was Field Club. “We love the old homes and the feel of the neighborhood. It is as close as we could get to a New England feel in Nebraska.”

This opportunity soon became available. Erik is a pastor and he began a church in South Omaha in 2011 (Emmaus Bible Church). They were trying to move closer to the church and thankfully, found the house on 36th and Poppleton.

Q: What do you like to do for fun as a family?

A: As a family we enjoy spending time together. Whether taking walks, doing errands, playing board games, talking, or whatever; we spend a lot of time together. We also really enjoy having people in our home. We are thankful for a home with space inside and out so we can entertain a bunch of people. It’s great.

As far as personal hobbies, Erik likes reading, writing, and fitness. Christie enjoys fitness, creative endeavors, and homeschooling the kids. Bryce is a college student at UNO who enjoys fitness and reading. Luke is a musician who plays guitar, piano, and soon to be violin. Alaynah also likes music (piano & flute). Alexis enjoys crafts and animals. Zoe likes to sing and play with her sisters. Bo enjoys baseball and being a super-hero.

Q: What have you enjoyed about the last year in your new home?

A: People are so very friendly. We have also enjoyed some of the events (progressive dinner, 4th of July parade and fireworks, etc).

Q: Is there anything that you would like to tell other FC residents?

A: The neighborhood is as good as we make it. We have beautiful, historic homes and great people. Let’s work to get to know one another. After all, the homes are nice but the people make it special.

Historic Lighting Update (Phase 2)
By. Bryan Melvin, FCHL VP
I’m sure many of you assumed that the original historic lighting that was put in several years ago was the extent of the work we were doing with the grant money we received, but that is far from the case!  The FCHL board has been working with the city and OPPD to use the remaining grant money (which we can only use for the historic lighting) and install additional lights within the interior of the Field Club neighborhood.

The initial historic lighting was installed at the boundary corners of the neighborhood – 36th & Center, 32nd & Center, 32nd & Woolworth, Turner & Poppleton, and Pacific & 36th.  Additionally, the lights were installed down both sides of Woolworth from 36th to Turner to correspond with the Woolworth median.  This first phase of the project helped highlight our neighborhood and put some visible bounds to it, but did not do much in the way of putting these beautiful historic lights throughout the neighborhood for all of Field Club to truly enjoy.

This 2nd phase of lighting installs was specifically geared towards addressing the interior of the neighborhood.  This time, we are installing an additional 9 single-fixture lights at intersections inside the Field Club boundary (replacing an existing grey city pole at the intersection).  The locations we have identified are:

  • 35th Ave & Pacific
  • 35th Ave & Poppleton
  • 35th St & Poppleton
  • 35th St & Pine
  • 35th St & Hickory
  • 35th St & Walnut
  • 33rd St & Pine
  • 33rd St & Hickory
  • 33rd St & Walnut

Feedback on the plan from you all at the April general meeting was very positive, and we have continued moving this forward.   FCHL has gotten approval from the city, and OPPD engineering is currently finalizing the installation design for the nine lights listed above – once we get their final design and timeline estimate, we will make sure to update everyone so that you know when to start looking for them!
