You've got work questions. Aliza Licht is here to solve them in her weekly column in TrendingNY.

I pitched an idea I felt strongly about, and it's going in a direction I don't like. Do I let it go, or try to fight for what I think will be a bigger success?

When you bring an idea into the world, it's natural for it to evolve — a basic tenet of collaboration is that ideas should grow and change with input from a team. Though it may be frustrating to see your intellectual baby morph into something unrecognizable, if everyone thinks it should go in another direction, it's best to defer to the team. But you can take pride in knowing that you originated an idea that gained traction — and the result might just turn out to be a pleasant surprise.

I work in an industry with very few opportunities. When is it best to be patient, and when is it time to move on?

If your résumé shows that you jump ship too quickly, employers may hesitate to invest in training you. I think every position deserves two years. After that, if you feel there's absolutely no room for growth, you might consider moving on. On the other hand, there's something to be said for waiting it out and growing within a company. Someone always leaves eventually and that may open up an opportunity that you never saw coming.

Everyone in my life asks about my long-term career plans. I'm not even sure what my short-term goals are. What's the key to planning for your career?

I don't believe in long-term plans. They never come together the way you envision them, and then you're left feeling like a failure because you didn't "succeed" at living up to a preconceived ideas of where you should be. What I do believe in is focusing on short-term goals and putting 200 percent into the present, with the hope that in doing so, you will secure a better future. Kill it in your current role and doors will open. Then you just have to choose which door to walk through. There are multiple paths and multiple right answers. Let the universe do the steering for you.
