5 tips for transitioning to summer!

  1. Summertime hopes and expectations are different for each member of the family. Discuss each person's desires for the summer, and see how you can work together on these!
  2. Household chores belong to everyone in the family. Together, make a list of all of the work that needs to be done, then agree on who is doing what.  It's a great time for children to learn to cook or do the laundry.  Have everyone select jobs they want, this will result in more cooperation. Make it fun, turn on the music, and dance together as chores are being done!
  3.  Together as a family, create a list of fun family activities.  Each week decide which activity would be special for that week.  Scavenger hunts, painting rocks, and water balloon fights are all fun, inexpensive, or free.
  4. Connecting more without devices is so important!  Have a family discussion about how much time per day or week each person can be on an electronic device, and reach an agreement.  This includes adults!
  5. Summertime routines can be much more relaxed than school year ones.  Sit with each child and build a summer routine chart for mornings, bedtime, and any other times that are struggles.

Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way
is one of the most fun workshops you can attend. In addition to being fun, you will learns skills and activities that you can use every day with clients and in parenting classes.
This training, developed by Jane Nelsen and Lynn Lott, is based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs, and has been encouraging to parents and teachers for many years. Now, the principles are being validated by neuroscience, which shows that kind and firm discipline (based on an encouragement model) is much more effective than discipline based on punishment and rewards. However, many parents and teachers will not give up punishment and rewards until they learn tools and skills that work better and make their lives (and the lives of their children) more effective and more enjoyable.

Participants in this workshop will:

  • Learn research based effective tools and techniques for teaching parents how to use discipline that is kind and firm at the same time (non-punitive, non-permissive).
  • Learn how to facilitate a parent class from the position of a non-expert.
  • Gain practice with experiential exercises that help parents go beyond intellectual understanding to be able to respond in empowering ways that teach children.
  • Learn how to use materials and activities in group settings, parenting classes and individual work with families.
