Assam Floods: situation remains critical, 1.88 lakh affected

Flood situation in Assam remained critical on Saturday with over 1.88 lakh people reeling under the impact of the deluge in six districts across the state.

Homes and fields were submerged by the swirling flood waters of the swollen Brahmaputra river and its tributaries in Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Morigaon, Jorhat, Dhemaji and Biswanath districts, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

In the current wave of floods, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat in Jorhat, Dikhow at Sibsagar, while Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, it said.

District authorities have set up 21 relief camps in Jorhat and Golaghat districts sheltering 3,811 flood-hit people.

Roads, embankments and other infrastructure have been damaged in many districts, ASDMA added.

Till yesterday, nearly 1.75 lakh people in 244 villages of the state were affected by the floods. About 1.25 lakh people in 166 villages of Assam were hit by floods till Thursday.
