Throwback Thursday - 1991 Bulldog Baseball Squad

Today's Thursday Throwback Photo takes us back to the 1991 baseball season.

This team photo shows the 1991 Bulldogs prior to their season starting. Asheville went just 19-29 that year but had some great moments throughout the season. The Dogs were coached by first-year skipper Jim Bretz that year.

The Bulldogs stunned ACC teams N.C. State and Wake Forest at Greenwood Field in 1991. Marc Rosenbalm threw a two-hit shutout against Ray Tanner's Wolfpack squad in the first game on a double-header on Easter Sunday. N.C. State was ranked eighth nationally going into that game but were shut down by Rosenbalm, 4-0. Later that year, the Dogs would edge the Deacons, 8-7.

Another highlight during the year was Rosenbalm throwing two complete games on the same day in a double-header sweep of Radford.

The biggest highlight of the year came in the 1991 season came at the Big South Tournament. Seeded sixth, the Bulldogs roared to the championship game wins over third-seeded Winthrop, second-seeded Augusta and fourth-seeded Davidson. Rosenbalm threw a shutout against the Eagles in the opening game and knocked off the Wildcats on just two days' rest.

Asheville would fall twice to top-seeded Coastal Carolina as the Chanticleers would claim the league title but the Bulldogs had a season to remember. Rosenbalm would be inducted into UNC Asheville's Hall of Fame in 2010.
