Nittany Lions' Women's Volleyball Team Registers a 3-0 Win Over Gwynedd-Mercy

ABINGTON, Pa. – After a slow start to the season the Penn State Abington women's volleyball team managed to regroup and picked up its third win of the season after dismantling Gwynedd-Mercy University in a close three set competition by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-15 Tuesday night.

With the win, the Nittany Lions improve to 3-7 on the year while the Griffins fall to 5-7 overall.

Sophomore outside hitter Sam Amaro (Philadelphia, Pa.) paced the Nittany Lions on offense with 14 kills, while fellow classmate and setter Cricket Lennon (Bethlehem, Pa.) was credited with 29 assists and libero Victoria Lohman (Frederick, Md.) paced the defense with 37 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Laura Kirk (Saegertown, Pa.) led the Griffins with 22 digs and six kills while junior middle hitter Brianna Greer (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior outside hitter Lauren Tressel (Pembroke, Mass.) had five kills each.

Abington started the first set slowly as the Nittany Lions trailed majority of the way to Gwynedd-Mercy. The Nittany Lions were not far behind as the Griffins' lead came to a halt after Amaro had a successful kill to tie the contest at 18 apiece. That was when the warm-up was over and the Nittany Lions finally took the 25-22 victory for the first match point of the contest.

The second set consisted of a close back-and-forth rally with the Griffins enjoying a brief lead until midpoint with the score showing 15-15. That is when Abington regained momentum once again and closed the second set out with a 25-20 win. In the final set, the Griffins were determined to make a bold comeback, but fell short to the eventual winner of the competition, 25-15.

Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Bohl (Philadelphia, Pa.) jotted nine kills and picked up six digs while sophomore middle blocker Maria Farrell (Philadelphia, Pa.) supported the Blue and White with eight kills and a dig of her own.

Abington will open up the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play at SUNY Cobleskill on Friday, September 19th. The Nittany Lions will open the NEAC Crossover against the host team at 6:00 p.m.
