Moving Day Tips – From your Vancouver Mortgage Broker

Moving Day Tips – From your Friendly Vancouver Mortgage Broker

Fast shipmentSo, you just bought yourself a new home or condo and moving day is on the horizon.  The last thing you need when all the furniture and dozens of boxes are loaded into your new abode is trying to remember where you put something vital like the bedding or the can opener. Moving is stressful and having to conduct a scavenger hunt is one less headache you need.

Take it from your friendly Vancouver mortgage broker, and plan your move well beforehand. To help you get off on the right foot, here a few great tips to make your move a lot easier and to help you avoid a lot of needless stress.

Organize a Bunch of Lists

Practically everyone has a computer, laptop and a printer so you might as well put it to good use. Print out a bunch of blank sheets that you can set up as rows and columns with a subject heading at the top. Buy a cheap notebook if you don’t have one.

Next, name or put a number on every box you are going to use and identify it on your records. The more you write down as you pack, the easier it will be to find. If the box just contains books, then you of course you don’t need to get too fancy. But, if it’s your home office, or supplies for the baby, you will want to get quickly organized and operating quickly. By listing where you have packed things, you will be able to find the important items you need quickly, simply by noting the item and the number of the box from the list.

Get Lots of Packing Materials

Estimate how many boxes you think you will need. Then, get even more because it’s always better to have more than you need than it is to run short. You will also need packing material for your breakables. Remember that although newspaper is handy it also can stain your items with the newsprint. It’s better to use bubble wrap or packing paper.

Make sure you have lots of tape and have at least around ten empty boxes for moving day itself because that’s when the last loose bits get all packed away. If a moving company is giving you supplies, you can always return the unused boxes or packing material back to the moving company.

Color or Number Separate Each Room

Use some type of sticker or marker to designate where each box comes from so you know exactly where it’s going to go. You can use names just as well such as living room or master bedroom, office etc. This also helps the movers to know where each box is supposed to be going when they arrive.

Use Wardroom Boxes

Everyone has expensive clothes, and the last thing you want is to have all your clothes get wrinkled and have to be sent out to drycleaners or ironed. If you use wardroom boxes, then all your clothes simply need to be hung up when they arrive. Don’t over pack these boxes so they’re too heavy to carry if you’re doing the move yourself. Also, it’s a good idea not to use these wardroom boxes for other items and keep them for clothes only.

Important Papers and Valuables

Whether you are using a moving company or doing it yourself, make sure that you keep all your important papers and valuable items such as jewellery, family heirlooms separately. These items should be kept in your personal possession such as the family vehicle or on your person in some form or another for safekeeping. Things get lost, misplaced, and even stolen, so be wise and take charge of these items yourself.

Keep Things Together

Mixing and mismatching different items in different boxes can add to your stress when you need to find something important. If you need to use a drill or screwdriver, you want to where they are and that they can be found quickly. If you putting things from a utility drawer and mixing them up with other items slated for the garage, you are going to have a devil of time trying to find them when you need them.

Start Packing as Soon as Possible

The sooner you start packing things you aren’t going to need for awhile, the more you will get done before the big day arrives. The closer you get to moving day, the more you want to get packed instead of waiting till the last minute.

Take it from your friendly Vancouver mortgage broker and don’t stress yourself out when you have to move by taking a little extra time to get yourself organized.
