Volleyball Goes 1-2 in Quad

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team went 1-2 in its own quad-match, hosting Immaculata University, Cairn University, and Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday. With the record, Abington is now 1-3 on the year.

The Blue and White opened up play facing Notre Dame of Maryland in the first of three matchups on the day. Abington fell behind 25-23 in the first set before taking the next two sets for the 2-1 lead. The Gators kept biting away, winning the fourth set 25-20 to force a deciding set. In the fifth and final set, Abington held off the Gators for the 15-12 victory to earn its first win of the 2014 season. Sophomore Sam Amaro (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded a season-high 20 kills and 26 digs in the win, while classmate Victoria Lohman (Frederick, Md.) also posted a season-high 34 digs.

The Nittany Lions faced Immaculata in the next match. Abington looked to take the lead early on into the match but the Mighty Macs' attack was too much to handle as Immaculata swept the match in straight sets with a 25-11, 26-24, 25-15 decision.

With Abington now even at 1-1 on the day, the Blue and White hoped to close out the final match against Cairn University with a 'W'. After each teams traded a pair of points, Cairn broke free with a six point lead twice in the first set before Abington came back late into the game but fell short as the Highlanders grabbed the 25-21 decision. Cairn would then continue that pressure into the second set against the Nittany Lions and added on a four-point lead en route to a 25-16 win to extend the lead to 2-0 before closing out the match with the 25-21 decision for the sweep.

Amarao led the Nittany Lions with 30 kills and 43 digs on the day as classmate Rachel Bohl (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied 21 kills and 37 digs with eight service aces. Lohman led the squad with a combine total of 65 digs and recorded a pair of aces in the 11 sets played. Sophomore Cricket Lennon (Bethlehem, Pa.) collected 37 assists, 13 digs, and a pair of aces.

Abington will take the next two days off to recuperate and turn its focus on next Saturday's quad-match as the Nittany Lions welcome Arcadia University, Wesley College, and Trinity Washington University (D.C.). The first match is slated for 12 p.m. in the Athletic Building.
