Halloween Haunts Diabetes!
Halloween is a deliciously spooky holiday, but it can be challenging for those with diabetes. All of the festivities don't have to involve candy, or candy alone! There are may ways to both enjoy some treats in moderation, as well as to help create interesting and imaginative ways to celebrate fall fun in other ways that don't spotlight and prioritize the sugary treats.

Sweets & Myths about Diabetes
There are many myths and stereotypes out there about diabetes and sugar consumption. In preparation for Halloween's sugar rush, help educate yourself, your family and others with the facts from Healthline about how different types of sugars do, or do not, impact those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes; or, impact them differently.

October is National Popcorn Month!
Since corn is harvested in early fall, it is no wonder that this month is celebrated as National Popcorn Month!
Popcorn has become a national American staple for decades, from picnics to movies to parties, to almost an every day treat or snack, depending on the many ways in how you dress up or dress down your corn. Popcorn itself, when kept to the bare and basics, can be a healthy, convenient and portable snack for those with diabetes.

Local Support Groups for Diabetes
Local groups can provide a place for those with diabetes to consult with diabetes experts, and to connect and receive support from others going through similar life experiences.

Where Are They Now?...

Mike Mokriy...

Have you wondered what your favorite counselor does for their day job? Or, perhaps you've lost touch with a CDF pal and would love to know what they're up to. Search no more! You can find out here in the alumni spotlight "Where Are They Now?"... Oh, and please remember to email and let us know what you are up to so we can feature YOU too!

1. How many years did you attend camp and what was the last year that you attended?

I attended the Chris Dudley Basketball Camp from 1998-2001.

2. What is your favorite camp memory?

Their are too many memories to pick just one. It's more so the whole process leading up to camp, from traveling to Oregon all the way from Toronto, Canada where my family and I had the opportunity of touring Washington State and Oregon. Chris Dudley Basketball Camp was very special to me because of the people there, from the campers, coaches, and support staff. I'll never forget the friendships built at camp and thanks to social media, I am able to check in with those people from time to time.

3. Did you learn anything at camp to improve your diabetes care?

Before training, practice, or a big game, make sure you are prepared. It was always important for me to be in a certain blood glucose range and have carbs close by. The best lesson I learned at camp is don't hide your diabetes - the more people know the more educated everyone will be.

4. Do you stay in contact with anyone you met while attending camp?

I have a handful of contacts from camp on Facebook such as Big Mike Farrell, Tyler Byrne, Kip Patterson, Chris Yost, Ben Rue, Johnny Brainard, and Charlie Fick. I always looked forward to playing with these guys and catching up with them at camp.

5. Do you have any advice for present or future campers?

If you are a potential camper, register immediately! The camp created amazing experiences for my family and I, and allowed me to enjoy the game of basketball with fellow diabetics. Even with diabetes, you are still capable of continuing your current lifestyle. Diabetes isn't a crutch by any means, it's just a reminder that keeps you in check by making responsible healthy decisions.

6. Tell us about yourself since your camper days...did you attend college and where...are you working...are you married...do you have children...anything else you would like to share.

2001 was my final year as a camper, and I was fortunate

enough to have my big brother, Chris attend camp as a counselor. I graduated high school in 2004 and was awarded a baseball scholarship to a 2 year college in South Carolina. I then transferred to Missouri Baptist University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on Marketing. Moving back home to Toronto, I began my career in the marketing industry and am now in a direct sales role with Hilti Canada.

I now call my home in Kingston, Ontario and live there with my girlfriend, Victoria.

Have a safe & happy Halloween

Sincerely,

Chris Dudley and
