 From the Desk of the Director

June 26, 2017, marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Since that time, it has sold over 450 million copies worldwide in 79 languages. Since 1997, the franchise has grown, with a theater production, nine movies, and countless toys, games, candies and more.
Harry Potter has been credited with reviving a love of reading. According to an article published online at
The Leaky Cauldron,
"Harry Potter seems to have a little something for everyone: romance, action, adventure, magic, friendship, the school experiences, different kinds of families, sports, and humor. There is also a dash of mystery and horror, mixed with a few fantastic animals. Rowling has blended all the above elements to make a rather believable story, especially for those who wish an alternate world existed."
Here in Dracut, we're celebrating the 20th anniversary in style. The Friends of Dracut Library, the Recreation Department, the Council on Aging, and The Arbors Retirement Community, are sponsoring a week-long celebration of all things Harry. The celebration will take place from July 10th through July 14th and will cap off with a festive Yule Ball!
Participants will be able to visit Diagon Alley, meet Hagrid and his pets, win prizes during a Scavenger Hunt, Trivia night and Kid's Bingo night, or share pizza and a movie with their families. There's no end to the fun to be had.
Registration is now open. Space for some programs is limited and bound to fill up early, so register soon if you don't want to miss out on the fun.

This month, we introduce you to our Office Manager, Carole Hamilton.
Carole has been a member of the Parker Library Staff since 2005. She came here after working at Dracut High School as a Library Assistant for five years where she fell in love with working will teens.
When Carole first came to the Parker Library she worked as a part-time Young Adult Library Assistant working in that position until 2013. In January of 2013 she moved full-time into administration as the Office Manager, working with the newly hired Director Nanci Milone Hill.
Carole loves working in the library and could think of no better place to spend her working day. She loves helping patrons and feels that serving the community is where she belongs. Whether she's assisting at the reference desk or stops to help a person who asks if she can find a particular book, she is always happy to help. She has many fond memories of working at the library for the past eleven years and looks forward to many more.
Carole enjoys sewing, the beach and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Did you know that there are two gardens on the library grounds for you to enjoy?
The Dracut Garden Club created and maintains a garden in front of the library and one outside the Children's Room.
The front garden is anchored by a
Kousa Dogwood Tree and showcases a variety of shrubs and perennial plants. Please feel free to walk across the lawn and check it out.
On the church side of the library, outside the Children's Room, is a memorial garden full of perennials, a bird house, and a butterfly bench where you can sit and read your favorite book. This garden can be seen from the Children's Room but you'll see so much more if you walk around the building and check it out up close!

Friends of the Dracut Public Library (FOL) is an independent, nonprofit organization of civic-minded volunteers. They support the
Parker Memorial Library by promoting library awareness, providing needed unbudgeted items such as programming, through fundraising and participating in literacy programs.
The Friends are library users who know what a wonderful resource we have in the Parker Memorial Library.
Their major fundraiser each year is the annual book sale. The book sale, which have become a notable community event, promote literacy by getting affordable books into homes.

Our Catalog Gets a New Face!

As you already know, the Parker Library, as part of the
Merrimack Valley Library Consortium (MVLC) will be getting a new online catalog - Symphony! Starting May 18th, our expanded online catalog will be chock full of the titles you're looking for 24/7.
Start exploring the world in a number of languages. Our expanded catalog will be available in English, Spanish, and Chinese, enabling us to better serve the community, and encourage learning across languages.
Symphony provides online payment processing with credit or debit cards for fines, fees, and lost materials. You can view your account whenever you need to: see what you're borrowing, holds, renewals, and more.
In preparation for this move, we will not be able to check-in materials from Monday, May 15th, through Wednesday, May 17th. We will be able to check items out to you, but we will not have access to our patron database. Therefore,
please make sure to bring your library card with you for all transactions, as we will not be able to look you up.
Some other things that you should know as we approach our "go live" date...
- We will not be able to issue new cards from May 15th through May 17th.
- We will be unable to catalog new materials that arrive between May 15th and May 17th.
- There will be no ILL deliveries between May 15th and May 17th. In addition, will not be able to pull any local holds for you.
- The Commonwealth Catalog is currently unavailable. Patrons will be able to access it again starting May 20th.
- Symphony will automatically reset each patron password to the last 4 digits of the phone number that you currently have on file with us. If you have an email address on file, you will be able to reset your password in the online catalog.
