GAZA CITY

A Palestinian child on Monday died of wounds sustained during Israel's recently-ended military onslaught on the Gaza Strip, bringing to 2,148 the total number of Palestinians killed during the 51-day operation, a Palestinian health official has said.

"Ziyad al-Reefi, 9, died Monday, succumbing to injuries sustained during Israel's war," Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qodra told Anadolu Agency.

The Israeli offensive, which began on July 7 with the stated aim of ending rocket fire from Gaza, finally ended last week with the announcement of an indefinite cease-fire agreement.

Along with the high death toll, comprised of mostly civilians, the operation also left 11,000 Palestinians injured – many seriously – while partially or completely destroying thousands of buildings across the coastal enclave.

Over the course of the hostilities, at least 72 Israelis – 67 soldiers and five civilians – were killed, according to Israeli figures.
