George Gives Back

Donation protected
George is a very lucky little dog. Thanks to the amazing Dr. Peters at MidCoast Animal Emergency Clinic (MAEC) and her staff, George beat the odds and is still here with us today. To help “pay it forward”, George, along with his human and the Loyal Biscuit Co. will be making a donation to the “Molly Fund” at the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County. This special fund is dedicated to the medical needs of animals in the shelters care. George is an Alum of PMHSKC and would like to help other animals in need of emergency medical care. The Loyal Biscuit Co. will match all donations up to $1,500.

So - think of it this way - if you donate $10, you are really donating $20! If you donate $50, you are really donating $100!  Every penny counts towards our goal of $1,500 to be able to make a $3,000 donation to the "Molly Fund".

George's Story:

On a Tuesday night in July, George was in the yard when a vehicle pulled into the driveway. He, along with the two other dogs, was excited to see who it was and ran towards the car. Sadly, George slipped and fell in the driveway and, while thought to be out of the way, he was not, and was run over. He was rushed to Midcoast Animal Emergency Clinic, where we learned that he had a tear in his diaphragm that had caused his internal organs to move into his chest cavity, as well as a broken pelvis.

In speaking with Dr. Peters, she did not believe that George would make it to the larger clinic in Scarborough with the extent of his injuries and would need surgery immediately if he was to survive. We asked the questions we needed - what would his life be like after? What is recovery like for this? What are the odds of surgery? Everything we needed to know to make a decision. Honestly, his odds of making it through surgery weren't good, but if he did survive, after recovery, he would be perfectly fine, and most importantly, pain free. Dr. Peters had only performed this surgery twice before, with a 50/50 survival rate. He would also need to be manually ventilated EVERY SIX SECONDS for three and a half hours (bless you, Sonja, for keeping my boy alive!).

When we left the clinic that night, I honestly did not expect to see my George again. Once we were home, there was no sleep to be had. We waited, not so patiently, for their phone call with the results and if he would be ok. Finally, we heard he had made it through! It was a tough one, they had lost him a few times, but George is young, healthy and was a fighter. We could pick him up that morning for transport to Scarborough where he would have his pelvis repair surgery. Maine Veterinary Referral Services and Dr. Steinberg were also nothing short of amazing and handled a worried, sad and very emotional dog momma like it was their only job in the world.

The first few weeks after he came home were rough. He needed to be supported with a sling every 4-5 hours for bathroom trips outside for six weeks. He had several medications, no appetite, lots of bathroom issues and more, but after those initial two weeks, things got easier.  We got in a routine. I could go back to my own bed (yes, I slept on a cot next to the kennel just in case he needed anything). And yes, I was that person that went and got a baby video monitor so I could watch him at anytime from anywhere to make sure he was ok. George just passed his 6-week check up with flying colors! He no longer needs the sling to help support his weight while outside. He only needs to be crated when unsupervised, and we can start adding stairs and 15-minute walks to his routine. In six more weeks, he has the green light to be a dog again and do whatever he pleases! George has been a real trooper during this, as have the rest of our dogs. We are all just so very thankful that the skilled and awesome Dr. Peters and Sonja were working that night at MAEC, and that we in the Midcoast have a clinic so close to home.

George hopes that you will help him raise much needed funds to help give other animals in need a shot to continue their life! Thank you for your support!
