Sensory Smart Strategies for Real-Life Challenges
Course Description:

This presentation will demystify sensory processing difficulties in children, emphasizing practical strategies and solutions for maximizing participation in self-care, learning, and playing at home, at school, and in the community.

Topics will include:

1. Understanding the relationship between sensory challenges and behavioral issues.

2. Techniques for decreasing sensitivity to noise, touch, movement, visuals, taste and smell while improving ability to handle multi-sensory input.

3. Sensory diet activities that help kids reach and maintain an optimal state of arousal.

4. Ways to avoid over-stimulation and deal with self-stimulatory behaviors and meltdowns.

5. Practical strategies for daily life challenges such as dressing, brushing teeth, sitting at circle time, handling transitions, handwriting, and more.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the workshop, attendees will be able to:

1. Define sensory processing and recognize sensory processing challenges in school-aged children.

2. Understand how sensory challenges impact behavior and learning.

3. Implement at least 20 therapeutic activities to advance sensorimotor skills and attention.

4. Implement environmental modifications to help children maintain an optimal state of arousal.

5. Use strategies to cope with sensitivity to noise, touch, movement, sights, taste and smell and sensory overload.

6. Share “sensory smart” teaching strategies with others.

Speaker: 
Lindsey Biel, OTR/L is a pediatric
occupational therapist with a private practice
in Manhattan where she evaluates and treats
children, adolescents, and young adults with
sensory processing issues, autism spectrum
disorders, and other developmental
challenges. She is co-author of the awardwinning
Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The
Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child
with Sensory Processing Issues, with a
foreword by Temple Grandin and the author
of Sensory Processing Challenges: Effective
Clinical Work with Kids & Teens published by
WW Norton. She is also co-creator of the
Sensory Processing Master Class DVD
program. She teaches workshops to parents,
teachers, therapists, doctors, and other
professionals across the country, and writes a  column on sensory strategies for Autism File.
